The Challenges of Mauna Kea
The legendary Mauna Kea Golf Course offers golfers the perfect challenge to match their level of play. Created by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the 18-hole championship course presents dramatic changes in elevation, large undulating greens, and 120 well-placed bunkers. There are incredible panoramic sweeps of sea and land, featuring snow-capped Mauna Kea, rugged lava beds, and the sparkling blue Pacific. One of the most spectacular features is the famous Third Hole -- where surging inlet water races to meet the rocky shoreline, affording one of the most breathtaking views in golf today.
When it opened in 1964, Mauna Kea was Hawaii's first great golf course. Located on the Kohala coast of the Big Island, it remains the standard by which all others are judged. One of the course's best features is that paved cart paths run only between greens and the next tee so you seldom get goofy cart path bounces. There are only two parallel fairways (5 and 6) so the wind never seems to blow from exactly the same direction. If there is a dominant theme, it's the elevated greens (14 out of 18 holes.)
